Gram to Tablespoon Calculator
A tablespoon of salt is not a tablespoon of flour. Pick an ingredient, enter either side, and get the conversion from its real density.
Conversion
Table salt runs about 18 g per tablespoon
= 5 teaspoons
Why the ingredient matters
Tablespoons measure volume; grams measure weight. The bridge is density, which varies almost 3x between flour (about 7.8 g/tbsp) and honey (about 21 g/tbsp). Salt varies the most by brand - Diamond Crystal kosher weighs about half as much per spoon as table salt.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a tablespoon?
It depends entirely on the ingredient: a tablespoon of water is about 14.8 g, table salt about 18 g, flour only 7.8 g, and honey 21.3 g. There is no universal number - pick the ingredient in the calculator above.
How much does a tablespoon of salt weigh?
Table salt: about 18 g per level tablespoon (roughly 6 g per teaspoon). Diamond Crystal kosher is much lighter at about 8.4 g per tablespoon - less than half the weight - which is why volume-measured salt recipes fail across brands.
Are US and metric tablespoons the same size?
No. This calculator uses the US customary tablespoon of 14.8 ml. An Australian metric tablespoon is 20 ml - about a third larger - so US spoon measures run small in Australian recipes and vice versa.
Level or heaped tablespoons?
All figures here are level tablespoons, scraped flat. A heaped tablespoon can hold 50-100% more, which matters enormously for salt, baking powder and other strong-acting ingredients.
